Common German namesWhen you ask a German for his/her name, it might happen that their names sound new to you. Other names seem very similar to English names. Here is a list of the most common German names (female and male):
Double names such as Hans-Joachim are not very frequent in German. Yet, just as in English, nicknames or 'Spitznamen' are common in German. For instance, someone named Thomas could be called Thommy by his family and friends. Similarly Annegreth might be called Anne. Sabine would be called Biene and Manfred would also be known as Manni.
