From here on, we will not introduce more new vocabularies, but rather talk about general things concerning the Spanish language and the Spanish speaking countries. Please be aware of the fact though that at the end of this lesson, you will be required to memorize all new vocabularies so far.

Even though, the two languages English (Germanic language) and Spanish (Romanic language) are not in the same language family, there are plenty of similarities between the two. We should always utilize those similarities while studying new Spanish vocabularies.

There are plenty of words in Spanish that look very much like their English counterparts. The following table lists a few of those words:

banco	bank	nombre	name
crema	creme	octubre	October
debate	debate	problema	problem
ensalada	salad	queso	cheese
familia	family	radio	radio
grupo	group	sopa	soup
idea	idea	bebé	baby
hotel	hotel	tigre	tiger
kilómetro	kilometer	unión	union

plato	plate	melon	melon

Capitalization in Spanish

As you might have already noticed, in Spanish, exactly like in English and many other languages, all words are generally not capitalized. Exceptions are the names or people and animals as well as the names of locations. Those words are always capitalized.
